Afin Brake Drums

At Techniques, we continually strive to introduce new products that will enhance your enjoyment of your Morgan. Our latest addition are Afin Aluminium Brake drums suitable for fitting to all Morgans. Developed for the track, but equally suitable for road cars, the deep cooling fins effectively remove heat from the drums, significantly reducing brake fade. Our drums have been manufactured to the highest standard and are a direct replacement to the standard drum.

For the more technically minded, our Afin drum comprises a cast iron insert that is placed at temperature into a high integrity, box less, sand casting system and is then encapsulated in an aluminium alloy chosen to give low differential expansion and high elasticity. Design of the drum is optimised to increase aluminium flow avoiding entrapment of air. Material analysis performed before each melt ensures consistency to the manufacturing process maintaining the high level of quality and accuracy to the casting.

The labour intensive casting process gives very high levels of surface contact between the materials even under high operating temperature conditions. This promotes maximum heat transfer to the cooling fins significantly reducing brake fade especially in arduous road and competition conditions.

All this attention to detail and quality in design, materials and manufacturing produces a finned aluminium brake drum specification improving on pre-war standards and that far exceeds the currently available mass market pressed drums that are modified to fit classic cars. The fins give great strength and bulk to the drum that dissipates heat better and avoids the distortion that can occur with radial fin drums.

Our Afin drums are available in different sizes to fit most Morgan models whether shod with wire or alloy wheels. They can also be polished and look fantastic inside cars with wire wheels. Please call for prices.

Aluminium Radiators

This long hot summer has seen increased demand for our replacement radiators. Built from the highest quality aluminium and latest design of core, we can dramatically improve the cooling of your Morgan. Our radiators have been fitted to our customer’s race cars and are proven in the most extreme conditions.

We have radiators to fit all models of Morgan. Whereas we can tailor a radiator to meet your exact needs we usually supply a 70cm twin row radiator core which gives extra capacity and excellent flow through the radiator. Please call to discuss your requirements and prices.

Factory Parts

Aero 8 Maintenance

We have had the “history” of the Aero 8 visit our workshops this month. First we had the prototype Aero 8 with traditional Morgan bodywork in for a general service. Then we had the prototype Aero 8 Mark II arrive for us to install a complete air-conditioning system. This car has a Mark I body but all the Mark II bits including bigger engine, bigger brakes, different diff and gearbox. Finally, our Mark II factory development car returned from Le Mans Classic after a faultless run. This was the 1st car fitted with the wider body. For all your Aero 8 needs, please contact Techniques.

RACING NEWS

Mallory Park MOG 06

Techniques Race Technicians were out in force at Mallory Park to support our customers compete in two races in the Powertorque Morgan Challenge Series.

The first race was for the Peter Morgan Memorial Trophy. A large grid of 28 cars assembled on the short 1.35-mile course. The tension was palpable as the red lights went out and the pack charged off down to Gerrards. Techniques supported cars included Ray Higgs in his Roadster Lightweight and Philip and Sharlie Goddard in their Morgan +8s.

The race was for 30 minutes and was to provide a huge test for all the Morgan race cars. Each lap takes less than a minute for the quicker cars with Shaws Hairpin requiring the Morgans to brake from about 100mph to 20mph each and every lap.

Notwithstanding, Ray drove magnificently to finish 8th overall. The Goddards both won trophies, Philip for winning Class C8 and Sharlie for winning Class D.

The 2nd Morgan race was for the Arthur Neal Trophy but this time the race was for 20 minutes. 26 cars lined up for another long and hot race. The conditions took their toll on Sharlie’s Morgan forcing her to retire. Meanwhile, her husband Philip drove on for his second class win of the day. Ray also finished in a commendable 11th place overall.

Silverstone – Bentley Drivers Club

We were privileged to witness the largest turn out of racing Morgans at a race meeting for a long, long time. Over 50 Morgans were listed in the race programme.

For us, it was also the launch of the Morgan Techniques Trophy for 4-cylinder racing Morgans. We received a terrific response receiving 16 entries. On the day, we set up our marquee in the paddock and had all the cars lined up for the public to see – they made a wonderful sight.

The race was over 10 laps and saw a tremendous battle between three historic +4s and one very quick 4/4. Jack Bellinger capitalised on his pole position in the Morgan +4 ‘XOV’ and tore off into the lead hastily pursued by Matt Taylerson in ‘VON’. In turn, he was being chased by Keith Ahlers in ‘TOK’ and a slow starting Billy Bellinger in his blue 4/4. John Clarke was best of the rest in his Morgan +4SS. With dices going on right through the field, the crowd were royally entertained from start to finish. And what a finish...Jack held on by less than a second from his son Billy to win the Morgan TT. Matt had succumbed to a well-driven ‘TOK’ but then managed to sneak back past on the last lap to take 3rd. The full results are shown at http://www.theresults.co.uk/2006bentley_results.htm

We were honoured by Richard Shepherd Barron who gave a short speech before presenting the Techniques Trophy. Richard also singled out Will Sargeant as the driver of the day for his steady progress through the field to finish 10th.

The PowerTorque Morgan Challenge race attracted a massive grid of 34 cars. The race was fully appreciated by the crowd with much cheering and light hearted banter.. At the front, there was a tremendous battle between Keith Ahlers, Rick Lloyd and a returning Matthew Wurr with the Morgans finishing in that order. Dice of the day was between Tony Lees and Andy Green with Andy finishing triumphant after the two swopped places lap after lap.

Goodwood Revival

We had a fantastic weekend supporting Adrian and Joanna Van Der Kroft at the Goodwood Revival. Adrian and Keith Ahlers both entered their very rare Morgan +4 SLRs into the Fordwater Trophy. They were competing against such luminaries as Stirling Moss and Mark Hales. Keith qualified on Pole Position, ahead of Adrian so we were privileged to witness two Morgan SLRs on the front row.

The race was held on Saturday with the track damp. From the off, Keith stormed into the lead with the Ashley Sprite GT of Michele Tomassi close behind. Adrian was running a close third. There was then a titanic battle between Keith and the Ashley Sprite with the two cars swapping places lap after lap. Even after the Sprite spun off, it roared back to snatch back 2nd place from Adrian. Finally, the Sprite’s driver’s exuberance got the better of him and the car spun off for the last time leaving Adrian to follow Keith to the chequered flag. Morgan SLRs 1st and 2nd. What a finish!

Zandvoort

Techniques were out again at Zandvoort supporting six customers in round 9 of the Powertorque Morgan Motor Company Challenge. Built into the sand dunes, this ex Dutch Grand Prix circuit provided a real test for drivers and cars alike. At the chequered flag, we were pleased to witness the Techniques prepared Morgans of Peter Horsman winning Class B and Philip Goddard Class C8 with Leigh Sebba taking fastest lap in the same class.
